Norway's last public execution in peacetime took place at Stormyra in Løten on 25 February 1876. Kristoffer Svartbekken was beheaded for robbing and killing a young man, Even Nilsen Dæhlien, in 1875. The scaffold was erected at Stormyra, near the scene of the crime. There, Svartbekken was beheaded in front of 3000 spectators. The gravedigger took the body to Løten church. The coffin of a murderer was not to be carried through the church gates but lifted over the wall and laid down a good distance from the other graves. The grave stands alone and, tightly in against the churchyard wall, to the north.
