Ridderspranget - The legend about the maiden "Skårvangssola"

Share

This gorge, where the river Sjoa gushes round whirlpools is well known in legend - as Ridderspranget - "The Knight's Leap". It is derived from the legend of the Valdres knight Sigvat Kvie, who, after stealing a bride at Sandbu in Vågå, fled over this gorge with the beautiful maiden "Skårvangssola" in his arms. The Sandbu knight Ivar Gjesling was close on their heals with his men. To show what would happen to anyone that attempted to follow, Sigvat pushed one of his own men into the waterfall. Later on Sigvat had to pay for the theft of the bride.
