Gildesvollen is a listed conservation site. The site was a gathering place for large-scale ceremonies in prehistoric times, a medieval parliamentary court, a supplementary churchyard in the 19th century and a village school in the 20th. Since 1998 Gildesvollen has been privately owned by the Borgersen/Meyer family. They are committed to looking after this distinguished place as a multi-function site combining handcrafts, wood carving, honey production and extensive self-sufficiency as well as pilgrim accommodation.
