Flomstein - flood water depth marker

The water level of the river Otta during flood periods can be studied at the flood water depth marker. The highest flood height ever was on July 20.-24 1789 when the terrible flood "Storofsen" occured. The flood damage was the worst in the history of the area. Water and avalanches of mud pushed houses and farms into the river, and the landscape was greatly changed. Lake Mjøsa was filled with houses, trees and other vegetation. 68 persons and 900 animals had lost their lives, and 1082 houses were destroyed.
