Modum Blaafarveværk was established in 1776 after the discovery of cobalt ore in the area. In a very short time a whole community grew up around the production of the cobalt blue pigment. Around 1820, 1200 men were employed in the mines and produced 80 % of the global consumption of the blue pigment in the production of porcelain and coloured glass. Today Blaafarveværket documents the history of the mines and the society that sprang up in its wake. Major art exhibitions and concerts every summer. Guided tours, stores and a café.
